When life is tough, there can be nothing more comforting that a friendly face to talk to. As a Bereavement Support Volunteer, you will fulfil that role by providing post-bereavement emotional support to the families affected by terminal illnesses over the telephone.

Your role will involve assisting the Bereavement Support Team in providing short term support to the families of people with terminal illnesses. You will provide support while maintaining respect for the families’ individual backgrounds, culture and belief systems. This support will enable the families to come to terms with their situation and gradually accept their loss.

As well as providing valuable support, you will also attend monthly supervision sessions, ongoing training, and keep to the policy of client confidentiality while communicating openly with hospice staff about progress or concerns.

Offering support to people affected by terminal illness can be challenging and emotional, but you will find the support you provide can help people’s expression of grief significantly. You will play a crucial role in people’s experience of terminal illness, supporting them as they come to terms with their loss.

Supporting people who have lost someone close to them can be very challenging. But helping them to acknowledge and express their grief can also be extremely rewarding, both for the family and for you as a Bereavement Support Volunteer.
