HOURS:  6 Programmed Activities (PA’s) per week (24 hours) with 1 in 9.5 consultant on call (Level 1)

CONTRACT: Permanent

Marie Curie is looking to appoint a Consultant to join its West Lothian specialist palliative care service. This is a new substantive post (6 PAs) and will be available from June 2020.  The successful applicant will work as part of a wider multidisciplinary team to support palliative care provision across both primary and secondary care in West Lothian. 

Specialist palliative care in West Lothian is provided through an innovative partnership between hospital and community specialist palliative care teams, supporting people with advanced, progressive and incurable illness, and those close to them, wherever they reside in West Lothian.

The successful applicant will be an integral member of the West Lothian Community Palliative Care Team, and as such will provide strategic direction and clinical support to the West Lothian Community and Day Service Palliative Care Teams, based in the Macmillan Centre, St John’s Hospital, Livingston.

The successful applicant will also lead on an exciting new programme of work to enhance delivery of palliative and end of life care within West Lothian’s continuing care environments of Hospital Based Complex Clinical Care (HBCCC) and Nursing/Care homes, while also seeking to further widen access and improve outcomes for non-cancer patients in West Lothian.

The successful applicant will take full responsibility for the independent management of patients and running of the service, together with ensuring the delivery of the highest possible standard of medical care to patients. With effective and open medical leadership, the successful applicant will demonstrate excellent communication skills and commitment to the formal and informal teaching and training of health and social care professional colleagues and trainees.

Opportunities also exist for the post holder to develop links with two well established palliative care research teams and the University of Edinburgh

The successful applicant will be professionally and managerially accountable to the Medical Director of the Edinburgh Hospice and will also work closely with the medical team at Marie Curie Hospice Edinburgh.

The successful appointee will have access to IT facilities and office accommodation.

Candidates must have GMC registration and be on or be eligible within 6 months from date of interview for inclusion on, the GMC Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine (via CCT, CESR or EC rights).
