It’s the little things that can make a big difference – like having someone to chat to over a cup of tea, help to get to an appointment or just be there to listen when you need a friendly ear. That’s where the Marie Curie Helper and Companion service comes in. Dedicated Helper & Companion Volunteers support individuals and families living with a terminal illness. Support can be emotional, practical or the provision of information about other services. The Marie Curie Companion project aims to improve the experience for people who are dying in hospital and to emotionally support their families.

Reporting to the Manager – Marie Curie Helper & Companion Service, you will assist in the day to day delivery and coordination of the service including the promotion, recruitment, induction and management of the Helper & Companion Service Volunteers to deliver the service across the region. You will administer volunteer expenses and follow financial processes for managing invoices within the services budget and contribute to the completion of reports, including service activity reports.

You will also liaise with newly referred and existing patients and family members on a regular basis, establishing their needs and matching helper & companion service volunteers to them. This will include providing support to those using the service as well as induction and on-going training to the volunteers. In addition, you will schedule a variety of training events throughout the year, taking into account targets for volunteer recruitment and deliver the volunteer core training programme in partnership with volunteer co-facilitators and other colleagues.

An understanding and empathy of the needs of patients and their families living with a terminal illness is essential, as is excellent communication skills with the ability to listen and understand what each individual or family wants and needs in the way of helper and companion service support. The ability to respond quickly to service demands will also be essential. Ideally with a background in recruiting and managing volunteers or working in a similar charity or health and social care environment with volunteers would be desirable or perhaps if you are looking for your next step up into volunteer management, this could be considered. Some travel across the region will be required and you should therefore hold a full driving licence with access to a vehicle, insured for business use. You will also be required to participate on an on-call rota, providing support to other areas when necessary.
