Helper, Patient/Family Support

We're looking for friendly and reliable volunteers to visit terminally ill people, their families and carers, to offer practical and emotional support.

As a Helper volunteer you will take on a number of simple yet crucial tasks that will make a huge difference, this could be in a family’s home, a care home or out in the community.. You will provide one-to-one companionship and support, offer a listening ear, and spend time engaging in everyday conversation, activities or hobbies with the person you are supporting. We will provide you with extensive training so you can take on the role confidently.

The activities you carry out will depend on the preferences and needs of the person you are supporting, so you may spend time accompanying the person to appointments, social groups, or trips out and about! This often allows carers the chance to have a break.

A key part of your role will also involve signposting local support and care services and information to the terminally ill person and their carer. The support you provide may take place in person or over the phone.

This role is wide-ranging and the support you offer will vary according to the needs of those using the service, though it is important to note that Helper volunteers do not provide nursing or personal care, nor offer counselling or advice.

After each visit you will communicate details of the support you have provided, highlighting any actions to follow up and sending this to your manager. It is important that you keep your manager informed.

The Marie Curie Helper service offers crucial support to those needing a helping hand towards the end of their lives. The service would not be able to reach those most in need if not for the commitment and hard work of volunteers like you.

 This is an unpaid role.

Please note we are looking for Helpers in Nottingham and Derby only.
